News Roundup

Norwich Book Festival

Half term has been a busy time for the Reading Project. We were delighted to see so many children, parents and potential volunteers visiting our stand at the Norwich Book Festival in The Forum. Our theme was "Reading is my Super Power". Children made scores of superhero masks, read books about superheroes and played phonics games. Please drop us an email at volunteers@thenorfolkreadingproject.co.uk  if you would like to help at such events in the future.

James Mayhew Concert

Then, on Wednesday evening, our volunteers and members of the public were treated to a spectacular illustrated concert at the Assemby House by the talented author and artist, James Mayhew. James held the audience spellbound as he painted and narrated to the music of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. All profits were kindly donated to TNRP. Huge thanks go to James Mayhew, The Book Hive for doing all the organisation and ticket sales, musicians Caroline Speca and Will Fergusson for playing so beautifully and to the Assembly House for hosting.

Enrich the Reading Experience at our next Workshop

Last but not least, you are warmly invited to our next workshop which is all about ABC-the Anywhere Book Company.

ABC founders, Natasha Morgan and Saskia Sims, will be guest speakers for the event at 2pm on November 14 at the Narthex Centre, St John the Baptist RC Cathedral, Unthank Road, Norwich NR2 2PA, with refreshments on arrival.

ABC  create companion pocket-sized guides that accompany carefully-chosen children's picture books. These guides balance literacy comprehension with fun to help volunteers make the most of their precious time with the children.

Thanks to a generous donation from The Mercers' Company, we are able to provide our volunteers' schools with ABC book boxes. Each box contains 6 books and accompanying companion guides full of oral games that can be adapted to the level of the individual child.

The activities are dsigned to develop language skills, well-being and confidence in children as well as to foster a love of reading and words. The workshop will provide plenty of advice on how to use the book boxes and how to tailor the sessions for the needs of different readers. If your school has not yet got a box, a number of boxes will be available to collect at the workshop.

Please RSVP to volunteers@thenorfolkreadingproject.co.uk to book a place.
